Joe O’Neill is a painter based in Los Angeles with a background rooted in experimentation and formal training. O’Neill studied at the San Francisco Art Institute (BA 1994) and Santa Monica College, and his work has been exhibited in notable venues including Keystone Art Space, Art-share LA, and TAG Gallery, where he received the Grand Prize at the 16th California Open. Joe’s paintings have also appeared across film and television productions such as Michael, Presumed Innocent, Big Little Lies, Sharp Objects, NCIS, and The Shrink Next Door—evidencing the adaptability and resonance of his visual language.

Joe’s practice is grounded in curiosity and contradiction. He works in multiple styles simultaneously, often within the same body of work if not always on the same canvas. His paintings layer conceptual inquiry with material experimentation, pushing the boundaries of traditional formats. Whether gestural or graphic, abstract or referential, his work resists easy categorization—embracing tension, hybridity, and the visual language of contradiction to explore what painting can do in the present.

As the Resident Artist at Flake, a well-loved Venice café, Joe’s creative imprint extends beyond the studio into public space. He designed the restaurant’s logo and painted its signature mural, adding a personal and narrative-driven layer to the location’s identity. His ability to integrate fine art with design and commercial environments reflects a broader interest in the relationship between artwork and its context—how images inhabit and inform physical spaces, both lived and imagined.
